The Process of Getting a Bone Graft
What to expect at each step.
Step 1: 3D Imaging and Assessment
A cone beam scan shows exactly how much bone you have, in three dimensions. You’ll see it. From there we determine what type of graft, how much, and whether it can be done alongside your implant or needs to come first. Learn more about our 3D imaging and assessment process.
Step 2: The Graft Procedure
Graft material is placed, and the site is closed. Local anesthetic is used, and most grafts take under an hour. Patients are typically back to normal within a few days.
Step 3: Healing and Implant Placement
Your body integrates the graft and grows new bone through it over roughly three to nine months, depending on the size. Once the bone is ready, the implant goes into a site built to hold it.
