What Are Dental Bridges?
How a bridge replaces a missing tooth.
A dental bridge fills the gap left by a missing tooth using the teeth on either side as support. Those teeth are prepared and crowned, a replacement tooth is suspended between them, and the whole unit is cemented in place. It doesn’t come out, it looks like your own teeth, and it restores your ability to chew normally.
Types of bridges:
At NorthStar Dentistry for Adults, Dr. David Bunn and Dr. Jacob Weiss will tell you honestly whether a bridge is the right answer for you, or whether something else would serve you better.
Benefits of Dental Bridges in Huntersville, NC
What a bridge restores.
Chew Normally Again
A gap in your back teeth changes what you can eat, usually without you noticing how much until it’s fixed.
Keep Your Teeth From Drifting
Teeth move toward gaps. That shifts your bite, and a shifted bite wears unevenly. A bridge holds the space.
Fixed, Not Removable
It stays put. You don’t take it out, and shade-matched porcelain means it looks like the teeth around it.
No Surgery Required
For patients who don’t want a surgical procedure or can’t have one, this is the direct route. Typically, two visits over a few weeks rather than several months.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
When a bridge is the right choice.
You may be a good candidate if you have:
When to consider an implant instead: a bridge requires reshaping the two teeth beside the gap, even if they’re perfectly healthy. An implant doesn’t touch them, and it preserves the bone underneath the gap, which a bridge doesn’t. If your neighboring teeth are pristine and you’re a candidate for surgery, an implant is usually the longer-term answer.
We’ll go through both with you honestly. There’s a right answer for your situation, and it isn’t always the same one.

The Process of Getting a Dental Bridge
What to expect at each step.
Step 1: Consultation and Planning
We assess the gap, the supporting teeth, and your bite, with imaging as needed. Bridge type, materials, and shade are chosen with you rather than for you.
Step 2: Preparation and Temporary Bridge
The supporting teeth are shaped for crowns and a digital scan is taken. No impression trays. A temporary bridge goes on the same day while your final one is made to the scan.
Step 3: Placement and Follow-Up
Fit and bite are checked and adjusted, then it’s cemented in place. We check it at your regular exams and cleanings, since bridges last longest when the gums around them stay healthy.
Why Choose NorthStar Dentistry for Adults for Dental Bridges?
Dr. Bunn's Expertise
Dr. David Bunn‘s residency training included Dawson Academy seminars on occlusion, or how the bite works as a system. That matters for a bridge, which absorbs the force of a missing tooth across two supporting teeth. Getting that balance right is a large part of how long a bridge lasts.
An Eye for How It Looks
Dr. Jacob Weiss studied art history at Vanderbilt before dentistry, and it shows in how he approaches shade, shape, and proportion. A bridge that functions perfectly but looks obviously artificial isn’t finished.
If an implant would serve you better, we’ll say so. If a bridge is genuinely the better choice for your situation, we’ll say that too.

FAQs About Dental Bridges
Answers to common patient questions.
- How long does a dental bridge last?
Typically 10 to 15 years, often longer with good care. The supporting teeth underneath are a strong determinant of how long bridges last. Decay where the bridge meets them and the strength of the cement bond are also factors.
- Does getting a bridge hurt?
The teeth are numbed for the preparation appointment. Most patients report mild sensitivity for a few days afterward.
- How do I clean under a bridge?
With a floss threader or water flosser. We’ll show you. It takes a minute to learn and it’s what determines how long the bridge lasts.
- Bridge or implant?
Depends on the health of the neighboring teeth, your bone, and your preferences. We’ll walk you through both honestly. Compare dental implants and bridges →
- Will it look natural?
Yes. Porcelain is shade-matched to your surrounding teeth and shaped to your smile.
- Can I eat normally?
Yes, once it’s settled. Very hard or sticky foods deserve some caution, the same as with natural teeth.
